Consulting

As part of the Institute of Medical Statistics and Computational Biology, the work group Computational Biology offers several different forms of consulting to members of the University of Cologne.

The Omics Ambulance, our most recent offer, aims to provide free, fast, and informal advice in the field of high-dimensional data analysis in the life sciences, covering topics such as epigenetics, metabolomics, proteomics, and single-cell RNA sequencing. We offer planning of omics experiments, primary bioinformatics, networking, support of grant applications, and manuscript preparation.

In the domain of statistical consulting, we offer both advice for doctoral theses as well as research projects and publications.

Consulting for doctoral theses aims to support PhD candidates in the statistical analysis of the data related to their project. Over the course of up to three consultation appointments, guidance and supervision are provided. The necessary work (e.g., data management, application of appropriate statistical software for data analysis, etc.) must be performed by the PhD candidates themselves. As a general rule, counselling should be requested during the thesis's planning phase once the investigation's scientific question is established. Thus, methodological deficiencies during data collection can be avoided, which might hinder the meaningful interpretations of statistical analyses later on.

Consulting for research projects and publications is our most extensive offer and covers long-term cooperation with researchers in the light of specific scientific questions. The consultation includes biometric aspects of study planning and implementation, e.g., study design, data management, statistical analysis, graphical illustration, and interpretation of results.
